About Dr. Martinez

 

Maria Belen Martinez, Psy.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist who earned her Bachelor of Science from Cornell University and her Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology) in Clinical Psychology from Loyola University Maryland. Previously, she worked at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and held a faculty appointment at Columbia University’s Department of Psychiatry.

Dr. Martinez has extensive experience providing English and Spanish individual, group, and couples psychotherapy to adolescents and adults of all ages. She has worked with individuals from diverse populations and cultures, with a wide range of concerns. Dr. Martinez’ approach to therapy is collaborative, authentic, empathic, active and caring. She integrates empirically driven methods, including dynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and relational frameworks, with a highly personalized approach. With respect and understanding, Dr. Martinez works with each individual to help increase self-awareness and attain personal growth. In therapy, she provides support, insight, and validation to help clients effectively address personal life challenges and recognize their strengths. Dr. Martinez is committed to helping her clients better understand and express their needs to engage in a healthier and more fulfilling life.

Clinical areas of interests include depression, anxiety, maternal mental health (postpartum depression and anxiety), bipolar disorder, self-esteem issues, trauma and abuse, stress, life transitions, grief/loss, and relationship difficulties. Dr. Martinez has completed advanced training in Perinatal and Postpartum Mood Disorders through Postpartum Support International and the Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Intensive Training through Behavioral Tech.
